Autumn sun and rain kickstarts germination

Winter work on the ground continues, with the aim of having the square and outfield in good shape for next summer.

Phase one is finished. Areas of the ground that took a battering in the dry summer have been newly seeded, and the first shoots are already coming through. The photos show the green returning to patches that were bare and baked a few months ago. It is early days, but germination has been encouraging, and the autumn rain has done its part.

Phase two will start as soon as the contractors have finished pouring and laying concrete around the pavilion. That work was held up by last week's poor weather, and the ground crew can't move onto the next stage until the machinery and foot traffic are clear of the area.

In the meantime, please keep off the newly seeded areas. Seedlings this young don't cope well with footfall, and we would like to avoid reseeding the same patches in spring.

Thanks to everyone who has helped so far. More updates to follow as the work progresses.
