Last-Gasp Drama as Outwood’s Hess Steals Win from the Jaws of Defeat

Skipper George keeps The Soops survival hopes alive

The day started quietly enough. Outwood’s openers, Kendall and Cleaver, settled in like calm before a storm. They built a solid foundation, their partnership the slow, deliberate ticking of a clock counting down to something big. Cleaver was the first to fall — caught off a sharp delivery — but Kendall remained unshaken, his calm presence a steady pulse amid the brewing tension, finally closing the Outwood innings with his highest score for the club.

Alex Wood, making a welcome return to the 'Wood, then exploded onto the scene, smashing boundaries like bursts of lightning, electrifying the innings before he too was undone by a well-placed delivery. As the runs mounted to a competitive 214, the stage was set for a showdown.

West Farleigh began their chase confidently. M Davis and T Osborne took charge, carving out a rapid partnership that seemed to sweep the visitors toward victory. The scoreboard ticked past 110 with little sign of trouble.

Then came the twist. Two quick wickets from evergreen John Hall sent a jolt through the chase. The calm was shattered. West Farleigh’s hopes started to unravel, wickets falling like dominoes.

But the real turning point was yet to come. W Barnardo looked set to steer his team home, with a late assault. Two balls after being reprieved he launched a towering shot toward long-on. The ball seemed destined for six — until Outwood skipper George Hess appeared, sprinting full tilt down the boundary line.

In a moment frozen in time, Hess dived, stretching out a single hand just inches from the ground — and took the catch. The crowd gasped; the tension snapped tight like a wire.

That catch changed everything. From there, the collapse was brutal. Ben Thompson ripped through the lower order, and Hess himself returned to the attack. With ice in his veins, Hess bowled the final ball, uprooting the last stump and sealing a heart-stopping eight-run victory.

Outwood’s players erupted. West Farleigh was left stunned — their dream snatched away in the blink of an eye. On a day of shifting momentum and razor-thin margins, it was one catch and one delivery that decided the fate of the match.
