The Blazes played their first Surrey Slam game of 2020 against a strong South Nutfield side on Sunday 26th July.
Outwood won the toss and elected to field.
The Blazes made a strong start, removing both South Nutfield openers cheaply, Liz Peacock taking a fantastic catch in Maz Graham’s first over and then two overs later Maz struck again, bowling out the other opener.
South Nutfield then settled down and put on a good partnership before Fiona Farmer took a wicket with a beautiful straight ball onto the stumps.
With plenty of batting, South Nutfield had a good run for the second half of the innings capitalising on the gaps within the field. An 8-a-side game in a pitch sized for 11 players can be hard going. With a few overs to go, The Blazes were able to capitalise as The Maverchicks pushed for runs. Maz came back into the attack and took three wickets with her last two overs finishing the match with 5/30 off 4 overs. Honourable mentions to Tina Howard (0/30) and Beth Challis (0/33) off their 4 overs.
Outwood was tasked with the task of chasing 186 off 20 overs.
Tina Howard and Bernie Thomson opened the batting for Outwood. Bernie was getting into rhythm scoring runs but was bowled by a great ball from South Nutfield. Tina has been strong with the bat in the few friendlies we played and didn’t disappoint putting on a great partnership with Maz scoring 26 fantastic runs, out four runs shy of madatory retirement of 30.
Maz was well supported by Lucinda Charlesworth, until she was run out, guilty of not grounding her back as she scrambled for the crease. With an over to go and too many runs to make, Maz retired not out on 33.
Beth and Liz batted out the final overs which closed with the score on 112/4. The South Nutfield Maverchicks are a strong side, both with the bat and ball, so preventing them getting us all out was quite an acheivement and our performance gave us some bonus points.
The Blazes are back out on the cricket field on Monday 3rd August at Newdigate!
